Gudb em inglês
Gudb was a male gangster of an unidentified species and scourge of the Stenness star system in the name of Great Bogga the Hutt. He was the primary henchman in Bogga's enforcer gang, a group of beings that exercised Bogga's will throughout Stenness. Gudb had a pet gorm worm named Skritch, with whom he had faced many an opponent, including Jedi on occasion.
In 4,000 BBY, Gudb and his gang encountered the Human Jedi Andur Sunrider and his family on the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal. Gudb was ordered to steal the Adegan lightsaber crystals in the Jedi's possession and managed to kill Sunrider, but was driven off without the crystals by the deceased's widow, Nomi, who took up his lightsaber and slew two of Gudb's companions. He returned to Bogga's stronghold defeated, and the Hutt accompanied Gudb on his next mission—to the planet Ambria, where the woman had fled to the safety of the resident Jedi. He and his thugs were challenged by the Vultan Jedi Oss Wilum upon their arrival, whom they overcame and prepared to kill. Gudb and his team were defeated again when Wilum's Master Thon attacked, causing them to retreat before the Jedi's strength in the Force.
Bogga later sent Gudb and his gang back to Ambria, to once again attack the Jedi and retrieve the crystals. Gudb's forces nearly succeeded, when the same timid woman from the hyperspace terminal attacked, confusing Gudb's men with Jedi battle meditation and cutting them down with her lightsaber. Rather than stay and face Nomi Sunrider again, Gudb fled Ambria in defeat to instead face the wrath of Bogga the Hutt.
Stenness pirate
"Hey, boss…see that Jedi with the woman and kid? I heard 'im talkin' about some Adegan crystals he's carryin'!""HAWR HAWR HAWR Adegan crystals! I have a client who'll pay me a grand sum for those pretties. Get them, Gudb. But watch out—he's a Jedi."
―Gudb, receiving orders from Bogga
Gudb was a pirate of the Stenness star system in the service of Stenness' resident crimelord, a Hutt known as Great Bogga. Though Bogga himself held court in his private residence on the moon of Vo Dasha,[4] his gang of thugs, of which Gudb was foremost, frequented the local hyperspace terminal. There, Gudb and his partners engaged in various acts of piracy and waited to prey upon unsuspecting travelers who were unfortunate enough to encounter them. He often operated with his pet gorm worm Skritch, whose poisonous bite was a weapon employed by Gudb in combat. Gudb and Skritch encountered many foes in their time together, several of which were Jedi. From these encounters, Gudb learned that by disrupting a Jedi's concentration, they became vulnerable, which made them easier to defeat.[1]
In 4,000 BBY, Gudb and two of Bogga's other enforcers, Quanto and Rek, were monitoring the Stenness space station's comm traffic, scouting for potential victims to take advantage of. Several opportunities presented themselves, including the arrival of a ship containing a considerable load of spice from Kessel, which Quanto expressed interest in. Gudb declined the opportunity, citing the fact that the bay where the ship docked was located on the opposite side of the station, making a timely interception of the vessel virtually impossible. Neither was he excited by the arrival of two aristocrats on board a pleasure yacht out of the Empress Teta system. Gudb's interest peaked when he noticed the arrival of a third ship, whose passengers, Jedi Knight Andur Sunrider and his family, were in possession of precious Adegan crystals. Knowing that Bogga would be particularly interested in the crystals, Gudb ordered Quanto to distract the Jedi, while he set out immediately for instructions from the Hutt.[1]
Bogga saw the crystals as leverage with which he might broker a deal with a client of his, and so tasked Gudb with stealing them. Gudb was also warned to heed his quarry's Jedi status, but the gangster felt confident in his ability to succeed with Quanto, Rek, and Skritch at his side. He and his team then set out to ambush the unsuspecting family, whose service droid, A-3D0, they encountered first. Gudb fell into the crowd as Quanto and Rek accosted the droid, causing the Jedi to approach in his droid's defense. Gudb positioned himself behind Sunrider, then bid Skritch to fill his poison sacs and attack the Jedi. The gorm worm bit Sunrider on his neck, releasing its stored venom into the Jedi's bloodstream. Sunrider fought briefly to free himself from the lizard's bite before he succumbed to the poison and died. Gudb immediately demanded the crystals from the Jedi's bewildered wife, Nomi, lest she suffer the same fate. The seemingly delusional woman began to converse with someone whom Gudb could neither see nor hear, and she shocked him further when she picked up her fallen husband's lightsaber, first bisecting Quanto, then turning her wrath on Rek and cutting him down as well. With his two comrades killed in a matter of minutes, Gudb recognized that the conflict was now evenly matched and considered his chances of beating the female Sunrider slim at best. Gudb turned and ran instead to report his failure to Great Bogga.[2]
Jedi ambush
"Alright boys! Let's peel open this ship like a can of nerf gizzards! If those Adegan crystals are on board, we're gonna find 'em!"
―Gudb
Gudb, after attacking A-3DO on Ambria
Gudb's empty-handed return was looked upon unfavorably by his Hutt boss. He attempted to explain how the Jedi's wife unexpectedly killed Quanto and Rek, yet Bogga was still unmoved. He considered feeding Gudb to his pet Hssiss dragon, Ktriss, who drooled upon sight of the enforcer. Gudb cowered in fear while begging for another chance to serve Great Bogga, and he was granted one—only next time, Bogga himself would join Gudb on his mission.[1]
Months passed, and Bogga's sources discovered that Sunrider had fled to Ambria, a desolate planet in the Stenness Node of the Inner Rim. Gudb, along with Bogga and the remaining enforcers, boarded the Hutt's personal dreadnaught, Enforcer One, on a course for Ambria.[2] When they arrived, Gudb and the enforcers immediately set out for the camp where Sunrider had taken up residence. They found and infiltrated her ship, the Lightside Explorer, where Gudb startled A-3D0, the same droid that he had encountered back on Stenness' space station. After his demands for the crystals were refused by the droid, Gudb shot him with his blaster rifle, completely incapacitating him. He surmised that the crystals were not onboard the ship and proceeded to set out for the Jedi's nearby camp.[1]
Gudb and the enforcers came across a herd of staga beasts outside the Jedi compound and began killing them upon Bogga's orders. This attracted the attention of one of the Jedi inside, the Vultan Oss Wilum, who charged out in defense of his cattle. Gudb fired several shots at him while one of the other enforcers blindsided the Jedi, knocking him to the ground. As Gudb prepared to personally execute the defeated Wilum, his Jedi Master, the Tchuukthai called Thon, charged from the compound. Gudb and the enforcers quickly fired their rifles at the Jedi, only to witness Thon repel their shots with the Force. Bogga then ordered the retreat, recognizing the Jedi's power as one Gudb and his team could not defeat.[2]
Return to Ambria
Bogga: "Prepare the ship, Gudb! You are going to pay those Jedi another visit!"Gudb: "Me boss? Are you sure you want us to—"Bogga: Don't question my orders, Gudb!"
Gudb: "But boss, last time—"Bogga: "Last time, you didn't have these!"Gudb: "Jewelry?"Bogga: "Fool! These are chains. Mandalorian chains. They will hold even a Jedi prisoner. Now go!"
―Bogga, ordering Gudb back to Ambria
Gudb's skiff attacks the Jedi on Ambria.
In Bogga's palace on the moon of Vo Dasha, Gudb was ordered to prepare Enforcer One for departure, as the Hutt was sending him back to Ambria to recover the crystals. Gudb was also furnished with Mandalorian manacles, believed by Bogga to be capable of restraining even a Jedi Master. Gudb was sworn to success; should he fail again, Bogga threatened to truly feed him to his pet Ktriss. He was then sent with a considerable number of Bogga's enforcer gang, determined to capture both the Jedi and the Adegan crystals in their possession.[4]
Arriving outside the Jedi's camp in one of Bogga's armored skiffs, Gudb and his team immediately spotted Thon, Sunrider, and her child and attacked, destroying their hut with a barrage of missiles. The enforcers then positioned the skiff between the Jedi and their ship, the Lightside Explorer, and Gudb led the ground assault on the compound in search of the crystals. Their blaster fire successfully chased off the protocol droid and seemingly forced Thon to surrender. After taking him into custody, Gudb announced that he had located the Adegan crystals. When he further alluded to his expectation that Bogga would hold him in favor for completing his mission, the other enforcers grew angry with Gudb, who they felt had accepted credit for a job he barely participated in. Gudb then rebuked them all and seized the crystals as his own, which caused several of the enforcers to stake their own claims and confront Gudb for their share of the booty. Soon Gudb and all of the enforcers were fighting each other, unknowingly suffering from the confusion of Nomi Sunrider's battle meditation technique. Gudb only realized the manipulation as the Jedi woman charged toward them with an ignited lightsaber, and fled before she could cut them down. Gudb, however, believed that Bogga's wrath would be far greater than Sunrider's once he learned that a dozen of his men were bested by two Jedi. He rallied the enforcers for a final charge, but they were soundly defeated by Sunrider and Thon, who was freed in the midst of the enforcers' indecision. Reconsidering his original position, Gudb ordered a full retreat, willing to instead face the anger of Great Bogga over the strength of the Jedi.[1]
"Oh my! Look what you've done to the door of this ship!""That's nothin' compared to the hole I'll make in you, if you don't freeze like an ice cube on Hoth!"
―Gudb, threatening A-3DO
Gudb and Skritch, partners in crime
Gudb was a short, rat-faced being,[3] with large ears, black eyes, and tan fur that covered his body. He wore a brown tunic, hat, and loincloth, with a utility belt equipped with his personal blaster pistol on his left side. Gudb could often be seen with his green pet gorm worm, Skritch, curled around his neck.[2] He was witty and loquacious, and regularly spoke in Galactic Standard Basic slang, though he understood Huttese, but was not fluent. Gudb was also bossy, often barking orders at Bogga's other enforcers, such as Quanto and Rek. He valued his pet gorm worm Skritch highly, and occasionally bragged about their joint exploits in the company of others.[1]
Gudb was an opportunistic criminal, quickly seizing any opportunity he felt would enhance his own position, such as when he attempted to keep the Adegan crystals for himself upon locating them. Before his fellow enforcers, Gudb displayed a tough disposition; however, in the presence of Great Bogga, to whom he was most loyal, Gudb was rendered utterly subservient, going so far as to stutter his words and even grovel when threatened with severe disciplinary action by his Hutt boss.[1]
Gudb showed no respect for women, children, or anyone whom he considered weaker than himself. He used intimidation when facing those he saw as lesser opponents and resorted to making threats should his victims offer any sort of resistance. He displayed a lack of compassion in refusing to allow Nomi Sunrider a moment of grief, despite her having just witnessed her husband's murder by Gudb's design.[2] Gudb was an aggressive individual, but when faced with odds he felt were not in his favor, he would reconsider his standing and usually make a quick exit. A fair fight to Gudb meant that he was the combatant with superior numbers and superior weaponry; when presented with an opponent who potentially stood on equal ground as him, Gudb preferred to disengage his enemy and make a speedy exit, rather than possibly suffer defeat.[1]
Skills and abilities
"My little pet gorm worm Skritch and I faced a couple'o Jedi in our time, ain't we Skritch? And we learned a thing or two…"
―Gudb
Gudb and his men are overwhelmed by Master Thon's power.
Gudb was able to handle blaster weapons and was skilled in operating communications and starship equipment. Gudb was cunning and bragged about his ability to contend with Jedi, claiming to have encountered and bested them during combat several times in his past. He did possess skills in undermining a Jedi's concentration to defeat them, as done with Andur Sunrider. He would also surprise his enemies with his pet gorm worm Skritch, whose poisonous bite carried the potential to kill its victims.[1] He preferred to keep his pet with him and expressed regret on one occasion for not bringing Skritch along into battle.[2]
Gudb experienced firsthand what a lightsaber was capable of, having witnessed his colleague Quanto cleaved in two with one. From then on, Gudb recognized the energy blade as a superior weapon and usually retreated when faced with one. He had no ability of his own to manipulate the Force and was ignorant to what it specifically was. He only knew that it was a field of energy of which his attacks were unable to penetrate, such as the Force shield created by Thon; nor was he able to withstand the powerful Force waves projected by the Jedi Master. Gudb was easily influenced by the Force as well and succumbed to the mental suggestions of Nomi Sunrider's battle meditation when she caused the enforcers to fight amongst each other for her Adegan crystals.[1]
Behind the scenes
Gudb first appeared in the third issue of writer Tom Veitch's Tales of the Jedi: Knights of the Old Republic comic series, titled The Saga of Nomi Sunrider, Part 1. He also appears in the following issue, The Saga of Nomi Sunrider, Part 2. Gudb was later featured in the audio adaptation of the Tales of the Jedi series, where his exploits are explored in more detail. However, as The Saga of Nomi Sunrider progresses, Gudb's role in the events, even his appearance, differ greatly between the printed comic version and that of the audio rendition.
Gudb's alternate appearance, as penciled by David Roach
Initially, the inconsistencies are limited to minor changes in dialogue. The first significant visible difference is how Gudb is drawn. Originally penciled by artist Janine Johnston, Gudb is shown as a short, fur-covered, rat-faced being.[2] The audio rendition seems to agree with at least his proportions as well; at one point of the story, Bogga states that his pet Ktriss, a Hssiss dragon, could swallow Gudb "in one gulp."[1] By his second appearance, Gudb is drawn by David Roach, and his features become more humanoid. He appears much taller and slimmer than before, though still with tan fur. His ears are pointed rather than disc-shaped, and he is also conspicuously without his hat. Along with his utility belt, he wears a bandolier of sorts and is equipped with a combat knife.[4] In The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, Gudb's physical traits are canonized as the original short, rat-faced portrayal.
It is also in the second issue of The Saga of Nomi Sunrider that Bogga commissions a new character, pirate Finhead Stonebone, with the recovery of the Adegan crystals. In the comic, Gudb's story ends here; however, his role is continued in the audio drama, where Finhead Stonebone makes no appearance. Gudb instead retains his position as Bogga's primary henchmen and is sent to Ambria. In the audio version, Gudb's character is given all the dialogue and performs all the activities originally attributed to Finhead Stonebone in the comic.
In the Tales of the Jedi Companion, The Essential Chronology, Power of the Jedi Sourcebook, Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide, The Official Star Wars Fact File 67, and Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force, Gudb is indirectly referred to in conjunction with the rest of Bogga's enforcers as one of the thugs who participated in the murder of Andur Sunrider.

Mace Windu

Dominic Raynor was the Human Baron Administrator of Cloud City until 1 ABY. Though adept at corporate matters, Raynor was a corrupt and despotic leader who ruled his city ineptly, bringing its status down in the eyes of many, and turning the Bespin Wing Guard into a breeding ground of corruption. Raynor enjoyed a number of pastimes, chief amongst them gambling, and also his lover Ymile. In 1 ABY, a gambler named Lando Calrissian attracted Raynor's eye as an opponent in sabacc, and the Baron Administrator challenged him to a game. Their first match cost Calrissian his money and ship. Even the revelation that Calrissian's nemesis Barpotomous Drebble had cheated on Raynor's behalf, though angering the Baron Administrator, did not get Calrissian his money back.
Calrissian soon got an anonymous donation by way of Raynor's aide Lobot, secretly from a group of fifty thousand workers who wanted Raynor gone. The second match went into high stakes again, and Calrissian laid out his starship lot against Raynor's position as Baron Administrator. Raynor accepted, and Calrissian won the match and city. Raynor left with Ymile, but he was not through with Calrissian. The former administrator attempted to get revenge on the man who had taken his job multiple times, sending a number of bounty hunters and assassins after Calrissian with no success.
Baron Administrator
Dominic Raynor got the office of Baron Administrator of Cloud City, the floating city of Bespin, traditionally passed down by decree of the previous administrator.[2] Though well-skilled in corporate issues,[3] as the leader of his city Raynor proved to be a venal despot[4] and inept at his job. Cloud City earned a reputation of infamy throughout the galaxy,[5] and the opinion arose that it had declined under Raynor's watch. Thousands of workers in the city and gas mines were opposed to Raynor's methods and how they had affected the city.[1] Corruption seeped into Bespin's Wing Guard under his rule as well, turning the unit into a disorganized band run by thieves and bureaucrats, only providing protection to those who could pay.[4] Raynor's law was draconian, and a thriving black market trade in droids sprang up under his administration.[2] Though officials of Cloud City were legally barred from gambling, Raynor was fond of the pastime and continued to do it anyway. He took on a lover, the Human woman Ymile, though she was not fond of living on Bespin and wanted to travel.[1] The Exex and Parliament of Guilds—the other two branches of Bespinite government—wanted Raynor out. Rather than use slow political means or more criminal methods of removal, they decided to set him up to fall.[3]
A sabacc match
In 1 ABY, Raynor took an interest in a visiting gambler to Cloud City, Lando Calrissian. Calrissian was enjoying a winning streak, and Raynor sent his aide Lobot to him with an offer to play against Raynor in the Ecclessis Figg Room[1] of the Trest Casino.[6] With Ymile joining them at the table, they began their high-stakes game of sabacc with a large audience in attendance. The bet quickly increased; when it reached two million credits, Calrissian ran out of money and had to put the title to his ship, the Cobra, on the table. Raynor won the entire pot with an Idiot's Array, the highest possible hand. Lobot, however, soon discovered that someone had cheated by placing a skifter in the game, and they learned from the dealer that Barpotomous Drebble, a nemesis of Calrissian's, had paid him to cheat. Raynor was furious at Drebble and ordered him arrested, but refused to return his winnings because someone else had cheated.[1]
Calrissian and Raynor's second match
Lobot, however, approached Calrissian with an anonymous donation of five million credits, claiming it to be from individuals who wanted the game to continue—but, unbeknownst to either player, the funds were actually a collection from fifty thousand workers who wanted Raynor out of office. Raynor was eager to begin a new game, and this one rose to four million credits before Calrissian added a new bet: his starship lot on Nar Shaddaa against Raynor's post as Baron Administrator. Raynor was amused and disinterested until Calrissian informed him that it included three rare pre-Empire Surronian Farstar ships, a collector's item. Raynor took the bet, and Calrissian laid down a Pure Sabacc, winning the hand and the city. Raynor, enraged, ordered Calrissian arrested, but the guards refused the now-former Baron Administrator's orders. Calrissian let Raynor go, and Ymile went with Raynor, delighted that she would now be able to travel. Raynor threatened Calrissian as he left,[1] and he was in such a furor that he forgot to take the Cobra with him when he departed the city.[7] Though there was a question of legitimacy of Calrissian's ascension to the office, as Raynor had not actually nominated him, neither the Exex nor Parliament objected.[3]
Revenge
"Men like Dominic Raynor have more than money: They have power, and that means they have friends who'll make sure I'm back on your trail before you even have time to wax that ridiculous mustache."
―Thune, to Calrissian[src]
Raynor would come to make good on his threat. The former administrator believed Calrissian had cheated in their final game—[8]and was partially correct, as Lobot had cheated for him, using an electronic device concealed in a pendant of Ymile's to rig the game.[1] With his underground contacts and leftover funds, Raynor hired the bounty hunter Bossk to get revenge on Calrissian. Bossk ambushed Calrissian in Cloud City,[8] but the man survived.[9]
Calrissian believed two further assassins—a Gank killer and a Human replica droid impersonating Queen Sarna of Drogheda—to have been sent by Raynor as well. Over a month after losing his position, Raynor hired the bounty hunter Thune to kill both Calrissian and Lobot for 200,000 credits. However, Calrissian outsmarted Thune and blackmailed her to call off the hunt for him, then hired her to capture Raynor instead. Raynor was taken in a matter of days and given to the interrogators of Bwahl the Hutt, an associate of Calrissian's. They pressured Raynor into dropping his grudge.[7] Personality and traits
Raynor loses.
"Winning is secondary, Baron. I just enjoy the games.""I only enjoy those I win—and I expect to enjoy this one!"
―Calrissian and Raynor discuss gambling[src]
A gifted man when it came to corporate issues,[3] Dominic Raynor was a corrupt and authoritarian leader,[4] not competent at his job,[5] and his time in charge of Cloud City saw the city's status decline in the eyes of many.[1] His aide, Lobot, who had served under many Baron Administrators, considered Raynor to be the worst.[10] Lobot saw him as a cruel tyrant. However, Raynor's power granted him influential friends and allies.[7]
Raynor was an extremely wealthy Human.[7] A greedy man,[3] he enjoyed gambling, but only when winning. When large sums of money promised to be thrown around in a game, Raynor was extremely eager to play. He was quick to anger, becoming furious if someone helped him to cheat—but not adverse to reaping the rewards of it. He had those under his rule who displeased him, such as Barpotomous Drebble, punished unpleasantly.[1] Raynor also had a penchant for seeking revenge against those he felt had wronged him.[7][8]
The Baron Administrator had other pleasures, as well. Raynor had an eye for collector's items, appreciating their worth and valuing them highly. His lover, Ymile, he called his "second favorite pastime" after gambling. Ymile was attached to him, though Raynor's desire to stay on Bespin did not please her.[1]
Behind the scenes
Raynor was created in Jonatha Ariadne Caspian's Galaxy Guide 2: Yavin and Bespin, though he was not given his first name until the Star Wars Tales comic Lady Luck, by Rich Handley and Darko Macan, where the character also got his first visual depiction.

His lover, Ymile, he called his "second favorite pastime" after gambling. Ymile was attached to him, though Raynor's desire to stay on Bespin did not please her.[1]

Denal em inglês
Denal" was the nickname of a clone trooper in the elite 501st Legion. Considered one of the most experienced members of that unit, he survived many Clone Wars campaigns alongside Captain CC-7567—nicknamed "Rex"—and Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. At the start of the war, Denal accompanied Rex, Skywalker, and Skywalker's Padawan Ahsoka Tano, on a mission to destroy Skytop Station, a Separatist listening post located on one of the three moons of the planet Ruusan. The group successfully completed their mission, blowing up the station with several explosive charges. Of the five-man squad of clones that was sent there along with the Jedi, only Denal and Rex survived the mission. Denal also saw action on Rodia, Tatooine and Orto Plutonia, conducting many missions on those planets. He rescued a battalion of clone troopers from a Separatist ambush, recovered a lost Republic cargo, and helped a Jedi in distress defeat a force of battle droids. On one occasion, he even saved Tano from a Separatist prison on Tatooine.
Denal was also involved in the discovery and destruction of a new Confederate superweapon—one that could prevent Republic radar from detecting enemy armies. Under the command of Skywalker, Denal participated in a Republic attack on the forces of the bounty hunter Cad Bane above the planet Devaron. The Republic hoped to rescue the Jedi Master Bolla Ropal from Bane and retrieve two valuable items stolen by the bounty hunter—a Jedi holocron and the Kyber crystal, which contained information on every Force-sensitive child in the galaxy. Denal was one of the clones who infiltrated Bane's Munificent-class star frigate, which slowly began to tear itself apart, having been set on the self-destruct mode by Bane. The Republic did not manage to rescue Master Ropal, whom Cad Bane had tortured to death. Aboard the frigate, Denal confronted the bounty hunter himself, but was killed by him. Bane donned Denal's armor in order to disguise himself as the clone trooper. Still in possession of the holocron and the Kyber crystal, the bounty hunter escaped from the crumbling starship with the Republic troops.
Clone Wars
A clone of bounty hunter Jango Fett, the clone trooper nicknamed "Denal" was born on the planet of Kamino to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic.[1] During the Clone Wars, Denal was a member of the famed 501st Legion.[7] He was one of the most experienced troopers in the 501st, having served on the planet Geonosis alongside Clone Captain CC-7567[8]—nicknamed "Rex"—and later surviving many campaigns beside him and the Jedi General Anakin Skywalker.[9] Denal was assigned to patrol the feared Outer Rim region, a lawless and dangerous region of the galaxy that put his skills to the test.
Mission to Skytop Station
"I could always hot-wire it, sir."
―Denal after R3-S6 failed to open the door
Denal, Ahsoka Tano and CC-7567 ready to face General Grievous.
Under the command of Captain Rex, Denal participated in a mission to neutralize the Skytop Station, a Separatist listening post floating in the sky of the Ruusan moon. The secondary objective was to rescue Anakin Skywalker's astromech droid R2-D2, who had fallen into the possession of the Trandoshan scavenger Gha Nachkt and was later transported to the Skytop Station. There, Nachkt hoped to sell the droid to the Separatist General Grievous.[5]
Infiltrating the station with JT-12 jetpacks,[8] Denal, Rex, Skywalker's Padawan Ahsoka Tano, astromech droid R3-S6, and three clones soon separated from Skywalker, who ordered them to plant charges while he went in search of R2-D2. Denal and the others soon reached a door that was ray-shielded. Tano instructed R3-S6 to disable the shield, but the droid, who was in fact a Separatist spy, instead stalled them until battle droids arrived. Denal was first to hear them coming and warned his teammates. Denal suggested hot-wiring the door, but R3's seeming ineptitude blocked it.[5]
The group was outnumbered, yet were able to use EMP grenades to disable the battle droids. At this point, Grievous arrived and engaged them, quickly knocking Jedi Tano unconscious. He then killed three clones and stunned Rex and Denal. As the droid general was about to finish off the two clones, Tano recovered in time to block the attack. She then ran off, drawing Grievous after her and allowing Rex and Denal to set charges on the repulsorlift generator for the station. Later, in the landing hangar, the clones met with Skywalker, who managed to rescue R2 and call his ship, the Twilight. When they informed Skywalker of Ahsoka's actions, he ordered them to accompany him to assist his Padawan. But as they set off on a rescue, R3 appeared and sealed the hangar, revealing itself to them as a Separatist spy by activating several Vulture droids. A moment later, several B2 super battle droids arrived. Rex, Denal, Skywalker and the Twilight pilot hid behind several shipping crates and fired at the droids. Skywalker then ordered Rex to trigger the explosives just as Tano rejoined the group. Together, they destroyed all enemies, and with the help of R2, who opened hangar doors and destroyed R3, they escaped the doomed battlesphere aboard the Twilight.[5]
Superweapon
"This is where the fun begins."
―Denal
Denal on Rodia.
At one point during the war, rumors about a new Confederacy secret project in development somewhere in the Outer Rim led the Galactic Republic to send entire legions of clone troopers to the region in order to investigate. As part of a battalion of clones[10]—576 troops[11]—Denal was dispatched to the planet Rodia. While on Rodia, his battalion was ambushed and surrounded by overwhelming droid forces, after enemy artillery took out most of the Republic transports. Denal took charge of the battalion and ordered his men to call for reinforcements. However, they soon discovered that the droids had been jamming their signals, so Denal and his men sought to capture a comm relay station in order to contact the fleet. After successfully capturing it and defending against droid counter-attacks, Denal and his battalion managed to contact the fleet and escape to safety on a LAAT/i gunship.[10]
Soon, Denal was contacted by Captain Rex, who ordered him to make way for reinforcements by destroying all droids in a nearby jungle clearing. Denal quickly completed his objective, allowing the Republic to land additional forces on Rodia. He was then once again contacted by Rex with the order to destroy a transport factory. The factory could only be destroyed by hacking the console that triggered the self-destruct mechanism. Instead of using the shortest way to the console, Denal chose to go through the hidden path in the swamp, destroying an MTT with a grenade along the way. He then triggered the base's self-destruction mechanism and left with his squad on a LAAT/i. Following the completion of that mission, Denal was called to assist a lone Jedi in distress on the frozen world of Orto Plutonia. His squad helped the Jedi to defeat the droids and then evacuated him from the planet. Near the evacuation LAAT/i, they met Ahsoka Tano, who was sent by her Master to help the Jedi. Denal then participated in two subsequent missions on Orto Plutonia, involving the recovery of a lost Republic weapons shipment and the search for a missing LAAT/i and its crew. During these missions Denal grew suspicious of a large Separatist presence on Orto Plutonia and of droids that could somehow evade being detected by Republic radar.[10]
Denal firing his DC-15S blaster.
Denal's squad was next dispatched by Rex to Tatooine, to investigate a seemingly deserted Separatist base, which was in fact swarming with droids. After clearing the base of the hostiles, Denal grew suspicious, as he was informed by the scout team about the droid presence in the desert. After completing yet another mission there, Denal was told by Rex that the Republic had discovered another base deep in the desert, a hidden Confederacy research station, that was suspected to be related to the rumored new Confederacy project. Since the station was already in the process of evacuation, Denal was ordered to act quickly, before the enemy could destroy all evidence of the project. His suspicions finally proved true, Denal led his clones into the station, only to find a message from General Grievous, who claimed that the Republic would soon be finished, and to be attacked by a complement of droids, including a DSD1 dwarf spider droid.[10]
After downloading secret plans hidden inside the station, Denal and his men escaped the installation by calling a gunship with the enemy console, but not before disarming a bomb planted on it. The data retrieved from Tatooine revealed a new Separatist superweapon, capable of clouding entire armies from Republic radar. Denal was sent to investigate further on Rodia. He infiltrated the local Trade Federation base and stole another set of data. Returning to Tatooine to investigate a small droid encampment, Denal received intelligence from High Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi about Tano being held in a Separatist prison. Once inside, Denal's troops again encountered the same Jedi they had rescued earlier on Orto Plutonia. The Jedi joined them in a quest to free Skywalker's Padawan. With his help, Denal was able to rescue Tano.[10]
It was then decided to steal the superweapon plans and attack the main Separatist headquarters. Denal was ordered by Rex to destroy several Confederacy bases that supplied the main base in order to weaken its defenses. Once again reuniting with the Jedi on Tatooine, Denal destroyed a construction yard that produced droid fighters, then infiltrated the research station on Orto Plutonia and stole the superweapon plans. Later, he destroyed a weapons factory on Rodia. Dropped behind enemy lines, Denal then reached the main Separatist base on Orto Plutonia, where the superweapon was being developed. After receiving some help from Tano, who cut a way through the ice with her lightsaber, Denal infiltrated the base and created a massive short-circuit in the superweapon's mainframe. A chain reaction began, bringing an end to the construction of the weapon. After he returned to the fleet, Denal was congratulated by General Kenobi, only to be sent by Rex to another mission soon thereafter.[10]
Devaron
"Hold it right there! You're not going anywhere, bounty hunter."
―Denal to Cad Bane
Later in the war, Denal was among the Republic troops that participated in a battle above the planet Devaron. The Republic task force under the command of Anakin Skywalker traveled to the planet to confront the Duros bounty hunter Cad Bane—who had recently stolen a Jedi holocron from the Jedi Temple on the galactic capital Coruscant[12]—and had also abducted Jedi Master Bolla Ropal on Devaron. Bane hoped to force Ropal to open the holocron so he could read the data stored in the Kyber crystal—a repository of every known Force-sensitive child in the galaxy. In an attempt to prevent Bane from accessing this vital information and delivering it to the Separatists, the Republic fleet attacked Munificent-class star frigates under Bane's command. After the Republic destroyed the engines of the frigate that was carrying Ropal and Bane, Skywalker decided to board it and recover the holocron and the crystal, as well as rescue the captive Jedi Master.[3]
Skywalker informs Denal and Rex of his plan to infiltrate Cad Bane's frigate.
The Republic Venator-class Star Destroyers, however, were not equipped with any kind of boarding craft, so the Jedi planned to use the pressure-sealed and magnetic feet-equipped AT-TE walkers in the assault on the enemy ship. Along with Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, R2-D2, Captain Rex and three brigades of clone troopers, Denal boarded one of the walkers, which were then dropped onto the dorsal hull of Bane's frigate. After a brief battle on the hull, the Republic forces infiltrated the frigate itself, though their relatively easy victory was due to the fact that Cad Bane did not send reinforcements, wanting to lure Skywalker and Tano inside the ship and force them to open the holocron; Ropal had refused to do so and had been tortured to death by the bounty hunter.[3]
The Jedi, Rex, Denal and the other clones quickly reached and secured the ship's bridge, although Bane had already fled to the other part of the vessel. Skywalker then ordered Rex to destroy all escape pods so that Bane could not escape with the holocron. At this moment, explosions started to tear the ship apart; Bane had initiated the self-destruct sequence. Although Admiral Wullf Yularen told the Republic troops to leave the doomed vessel, Skywalker refused and the strike team continued their mission, eventually finding Master Ropal's dead body, which was transferred to Skywalker's flagship, the Resolute. Moving further into the frigate, Skywalker, Tano, Denal and the clones spotted Bane running through one of the corridors and followed the bounty hunter to the gunnery deck, only to be confronted by a force of B1 and B2 battle droids.[3]
As a firefight ensued, Bane used his wrist gauntlet controls to deactivate the ship's artificial gravity, making the Jedi and the clones lift into the air. Noting that the clones had been trained for such situations, Denal advised them to activate the magnetic gripsoles on their boots. R2-D2, however, soon reactivated the gravity and Bane fled with the holocron with Tano pursuing him. Skywalker tried to follow the two and assist his Padawan, but was stopped by a blast door. As he started cutting through it with his lightsaber, one of the battle droids accidentally fired at an ammunition shell, triggering an explosion, as a result of which, debris fell, separating Denal and the clone troopers from Skywalker. Nevertheless, the Jedi set off to find his Padawan and ordered the clones to reach the hangar bay, find a ship which could be used to escape and wait for him and Tano.[3]
Denal corners Cad Bane.
The troopers complied and reached the hangar, where they found a Separatist Sheathipede-class transport shuttle guarded by a detachment of battle droids. As Denal and the other troopers engaged in a battle with the droids, the explosions throughout the frigate intensified, and Admiral Yularen told the clones to hurry with their escape. Rex then dispatched Denal and fellow trooper Koho to find General Skywalker. The first person whom Denal and Koho found at an upper level of the hangar, was Bane himself, who had managed to evade the two Jedi. Denal ordered the Duros not to move, telling that he would not get away.[3] Denal, however, was not able to subdue the bounty hunter and was killed by him. Bane then disguised himself as Denal by putting on his armor.[4]
As Skywalker and Tano reached the shuttle and were boarding it together with the clone troopers, Bane faked his own death; he made it appear to the Republic troops as if Denal and Bane struggled at the upper level of the hangar, and Bane was killed by the trooper, his body falling on the floor of the lower level. After witnessing this, the shuttle picked up the disguised Bane, still in possession of the holocron and the Kyber crystal. Thinking him to be Denal, Skywalker asked the survivor if he was able to recover the holocron, and Bane answered that he could not. Because the frigate was about to destroy itself, the Jedi did not return to pick up the holocron from "Bane's" body, and the shuttle departed the frigate, right before it exploded.[3] Alongside the Republic forces, Cad Bane returned to the Resolute, where his deception was discovered by Tano. Nevertheless, Bane managed to steal a V-19 Torrent starfighter and escaped by making a jump to hyperspace.[13]
Personality and traits
Denal: "Why would there be any Confederacy battle droids in the desert?"
Rex: "We do not know. Probably just some recon squad or lost unit."
Denal: "Somehow I feel that hard to believe, sir. There's something strange going on here…"
Rex: "Cut the chatter."
Denal: "Yes, sir. We will check it out, sir."
—Denal and Captain Rex
Denal was an experienced trooper and a gifted leader, as indicated by the many successful missions his squad completed. He usually did not question any orders from those of superior rank.[10] He was known for being able to "hot-wire" a control panel[5] and found himself forced to improvise after R3-S6's deliberate attempts to stall the Republic strike team.[14] Denal considered the battle droids' appearance in the Tatooine desert to be strange, and he grew suspicious of the droids constantly evading detection by Republic radars.[10] After the gravity aboard Bane's frigate was deactivated, Denal was quick to figure out to use magnetic boots and advised the other clones to do the same. Denal was bold enough to confront and attempt to subdue Cad Bane,[3] who was considered to be one of the deadliest bounty hunters at the time.[15] Denal was not skilled enough to stand up against Bane, however, and he was ultimately killed by the bounty hunter.[4]
Equipment
Denal using the magnetic cable.
"Magnetics! You were trained for this!"
―Denal
Denal wore a custom helmet marked with the blue color scheme of the 501st Legion. During the mission to Skytop Station and the battle above Devaron, he utilized a DC-15S blaster. During the latter mission, Denal also made use of night vision goggles and a magnetic cable built into his blaster,[3] while showing proficiency with a jetpack during the infiltration of Skytop Station.[5] Throughout his service, Denal frequently used explosive[10] and EMP grenades.[5][10]
Behind the scenes
Denal was created for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars project. He appeared in the seventh episode of the series' first season, and the second episode of the second season, titled "Duel of the Droids" and "Cargo of Doom," respectively, but ultimately was confirmed to be killed off in "Children of the Force". Like all clones in the show, Denal was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.[16] He later appeared as a main character in the wireless telephone game The Clone Wars. While most of the missions shown in the game can be completed in different order than presented here, this article represents the best possible way of completing them, which allows the player to use all mission bonuses, such as reinforcement points and air strikes. Denal later appeared as a playable character in the Nintendo DS version of the 2009 video game Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes.
Aside from his appearances in the television series and the two video games, Denal was referenced in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia written by Steve Sansweet and Pablo Hidalgo. A bobblehead of Denal was also released by Funko in 2008, exclusively in Wal-Mart.[17] An action figure of Denal was later released in 2009 by Hasbro.[6]
Inconsistencies
Throughout the wireless game, instead of his own trademark armor seen in "Duel of the Droids," Denal wears what seems to be the standard blue-colored lieutenant variant of the Phase I armor. In "Duel of the Droids", the markings on Denal's armor tend to disappear from time to time, most notably in a scene after one of the droids gets his head torn off. The online episode guide for "Cargo of Doom" mistakingly claims that Denal appears in the episode "Downfall of a Droid", instead of "Duel of the Droids."
There is a notable discrepancy between the wireless game and the television series regarding Denal's rank. During the game, Denal receives several promotions for his performance on the battlefield, eventually becoming a commander. This, however, conflicts with "Cargo of Doom," where Denal takes orders from Captain Rex, even though commanders out-rank captains in the Galactic Republic Army.[11] In fact, Denal continues to take orders from Captain Rex after his promotion to commander in the wireless game itself. Because of such conflict between the game and the series, Denal's rank is not established in this article, although his promotions—or at least some of them—may still be canon.
Additionaly, there is a conflict between "Duel of the Droids" and Republic Heroes regarding the portrayal of the mission to Skytop Station. In the game, the Republic strike team splits up into two groups at the beginning of the mission and approaches Skytop Station's main reactor from two separate paths. Skywalker deliberately takes the wrong direction and goes to search for R2-D2 along with Tano, leaving Denal and Rex to destroy the reactor. Soon, the Jedi find themselves in Sector AA-23, where all systems are suddenly shut down. Skywalker contacts Rex and Denal, requesting assistance. On their way to the reactor, the troopers find a control panel and reactivate all systems, allowing the Jedi to continue their way and free R2. Denal and Rex then destroy the reactor and set off to rendezvous with the Jedi at the hangar.
The destruction of the reactor, however, triggers a failsafe lockdown of the hangar's doors, which can only be deactivated via two computer terminals. Tano and R2-D2 head to the hangar to deactivate the terminal located outside of it, while Skywalker moves through the station to the second one. Denal and Rex reach the hangar first, fight off several battle droids and prepare the Twilight for takeoff. Tano and R2 soon arrive there as well, and the astromech successfully deactivates the first terminal. Several IG-86 sentinel droids then pin down Tano, R2, Rex and Denal inside the Twilight. Skywalker, however, manages to deactivate the second terminal, returns to the hangar and defeats the IG-86s. Denal, Rex and the Jedi then escape from the station.
